Stuppsy’s Desert Island Discs

I was shocked to find out that according to the rules I can only have eight choices.  This is going to prove to extremely difficult so I have created a page on which I can maintain my current top picks.

This was started in the post dated 27 November 2011.

The more I hear songs on the radio or on my mp3 player, the more I realise that the first batch of songs that I selected is going to need to be reconsidered.  Eight is such a small number that you have to be really, really selective.  The more I think about it the more I come to the conclusion that the songs need to be more than jist great songs, they should also represent something more.  Trouble is I haven’t quite worked out what that something else is.  I guess I will have to work on that……

Current choices are as follows:-

http://youtu.be/7RipehewU9o  Morning Dew by Robert Plant      (27/11/11)

http://youtu.be/JL5wei4phz0   He’s Misstra Know It All by Stevie Wonder    (27/11/11)

http://youtu.be/HAqUDDMhfA0   Drive in Saturday – David Bowie   (2/12/11)

With the benefit of a big old bucket of hindsight I now realise that DB put the lyrics together with his “cut and paste” technique.  At the time had no idea at all and just thought it was an amazing song.  DB at absolute top of his game.  So many great songs from this part of his career to choose from but this is my personal favourite.

http://youtu.be/weQ4oNk7Pqc  Do Anything You Wanna Do – Eddie and the Hot Rods   (2/12/11)

If you listen to this song then I guarantee you will feel like you will quite literally be able to do whatever you want.  Such an uplifting song and after hearing it I always think I will indeed be able to take on the world.

http://youtu.be/bd2B6SjMh_w  Crazy – Gnarls Barkley   (2/12/11)

Classic pop.  Just under three minutes of brilliantness.  I never tire of hearing it and normally when it comes on during a run, I will press repeat and play it again.

http://youtu.be/04mfKJWDSzI  On Melancholy Hill – Gorillaz  (In 25/1/12)

I have always been a bit of a sucker for a song with a bit of a hook in it, something that lifts it out from the pack and enables it to drill itself worm like into your brain.  This is one of those.  An uncluttered simple song with some thoughtful lyrics, benefiting from Damon Albarn’s vocal.   A song that I always enjoy hearing and almost inevitably brings a smile to my face.  If I am out on one of my long runs it always gives me a lift even if I am feeling completely spent.  So much so that I normally play it again as it always seems to be over too quickly.

http://youtu.be/S7D65IomNYY    Band on the Run – Wings  (In 22/12/11)

Probably an age thing as I was a bit young to really be that in to the Beatles, so for me this is Macca at his peak.  I always enjoy hearing this song and it still seems as fresh as it did way back in 1973.  What  really like about the song is the way that its starts off being fairly down beat and the whole song is turned up on its head with the line “Well the rain exploded with a mighty crash”.

http://youtu.be/ITa4xHDIC2M    New Rose – The Damned (In 22/12/11)

Punk rock in a nutshell.  The music, the name of the band even the band members (Messrs Vanian, Scabies Sensible and James) . I can remember being very excited about going down to buy the album, Damned, Damned, Damned from the Co-op in Fratton Road which had one of the best music departments in Pompey – they always seemed to get punk singles in picture sleeves which was an essential part of overall experience.  When I hear this I am transported back to 1977 and one the most memorable times for music – brilliant!  “Is She Really Going Out with Him?”

More choices will follow and some will undoubtedly be discarded along the way.  The ones that have been in but have dropped out are at the bottom of the page.

These were in but are now out, they are still excellent though…..

http://youtu.be/bd2B6SjMh_w  Pretty Vacant – Sex Pistols   (In  2/12/11  Out 22/12/11)

Ah, the Sex Pistols, described at the time as a blast of bad breath across the music industry.  If you were a teenager at the time you will know just how good the whole punk thing was at the time and how it thrust so many new bands into the limelight.  A fantastic time which is encapsulated in this song.

http://youtu.be/lwlogyj7nFE  Under the Bridge – Red Hot Chili Peppers   (In  2/12/11  Out 22/12/11)

Somewhat slower that a lot of their stuff but still a song that features in the RHCP live set.  If I was being critical then the ending lets it down a bit but still a great, great song.

http://youtu.be/BgrYf7VWASE  Blockbuster – Sweet   (In 2/12/11)  Out 25/1/12)

Blurred memory but 1973 around New Year, Lift Off with Ayshea on the TV and then this comes on with its intro of sirens. Suddenly glam rock takes on a whole new meaning.  Not sure how they got from Little Willy and Wig Wam Bam to this but they did – brilliant.
